Functional ceramics provides an often overlooked opportunity to appreciate art through use as well as appearance. In Japan, functional ceramics is admired as an art, and the art is enjoyed through use. The way a piece feels when it is held, keeps its contents cool in summer or warm in the winter, reflects the personality of its owner, and the way its color ages over time are all aspects that make functional ceramics a complex art.
Using a traditional Japanese wheel-throwing method and porcelain as a medium, the purpose of this project is to encourage an experience of functional ceramics through the way it feels as much as the way it looks.
Inspired by common tea bowls, each porcelain piece is unique in form and glazed simply. Each one is meant to be held, used and enjoyed over time.
